Chess is a two-player strategy game that is played on a square board consisting of 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid. Here are the basic rules of chess:

1. The game starts with the pieces set up as follows:
  • Each player has 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.
  • The pawns are placed on the second row from each player's perspective.
  • The other pieces are placed on the first row.
2. White always makes the first move.

3. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means to put the king under attack in such a way that it cannot escape capture.

4. Each piece moves in a specific way:
  • The pawn moves forward one square, but captures diagonally.
  • The rook moves horizontally or vertically any number of squares.
  • The knight moves in an L-shape, either two squares horizontally and one square vertically or one square horizontally and two squares vertically.
  • The bishop moves diagonally any number of squares.
  • The queen combines the moves of the rook and bishop.
  • The king moves one square in any direction.
5. When a piece moves onto a square occupied by an opponent's piece, that piece is captured and removed from the board.

6. Players take turns moving their pieces.

7. A player may not make a move that leaves their king in check (under attack).

8. The game ends when one player checkmates the other player's king, resigns, or the game is a draw.

These are just the basic rules of chess, and there are many more complex strategies and tactics involved in playing the game at a high level. It's best to learn from a more experienced player or a tutorial to fully grasp the game's nuances.
